Joseph Lister, First Baron Lister (1827 -1912) was an English surgeon whose great contribution was the development of antiseptic surgery through the use of chemical disinfectants. This development is probably second only to Pasteur's contribution in terms of the saving of human lives. He also made notable contributions in surgery and founded what.would later become the Lister Institute of Preventive Medicine in London. He was president of both the Royal Society and the British Association and was eventually raised to the peerage. Even with so many honors, he, like many other great Christian scientists, was still a humble and gracious man. Of Quaker background, Lord Lister was a firm believer throughout his life. He wrote:
I am a believer in the fundamental doctrines of Christianity.
