Philip Henry Gosse (1810 -1888) was a British ornithologist and author of numerous books on zoology. He was made a fellow of the Royal Society in 1865. As a Christian, he was an active member of the Plymouth Brethren sect. He is best known today for his book Omphalos: An Attempt to Untie the Geological Knot, in which he put forth the theory of creation of apparent age in the geological record, carrying it to the extreme of the creation of actual fossils and strata looking as though they had been deposited by normal sedimentation. His theory is often ridiculed today, but both his Biblical faith and scientific knowledge were genuine and recognized.
